At the start of this year, I decided to make the effort to make sure I learned and talked about all different holidays with my students. Holi has been one of my absolute favorite holidays to learn about.
It is an Indian color festival at the beginning of spring which represents the triumph of good over evil, as well as inclusivity.
The story we read, The Festival of Colors by Kabir Sehgal and Surishtha Sehgal, shows family and friends preparing their powdered colors for the festival. All of the friends, family, and neighbors are dressed in white, and suddenly, POOF, the colors pop onto the pages and the festival begins.
My students and I did self portraits on a white piece of paper so that we could also celebrate our own classroom version of Holi.
We then added POOFS of color all over. Here's how we did it.
First, you will need:
A measuring cup to pour water
Tin trays (or any type of tray for paper to fit in)
Chalk
Black crayons
Water
White construction paper or cardstock
The tins I purchased were smaller than anticipated, so I traced the bottom of the tin on white construction paper and cut out each sheet for students to make sure they would fit.
Next, have students draw their self portraits in black crayon. Have them push down enough that the crayon shows up thick. Do not use marker because it will bleed through it the next steps.
I labeled one tray per student and poured enough water into each tray to line the bottom. Then, students chose the five colors of chalk they wanted. I used scissors to shed the chalk into their bin. Make sure you put the water in first, or the color won't be as prominent.
Once the chalk is in, try your best not to move the tin. Then, have them place their self portrait face down into the water and push super gently, not allowing the portrait to submerge into the water.
Pull the portrait out gently and WAH LAH! Make sure you allow it to dry!
